A sword once swung by Xena star Lucy Lawless fetched top dollar when eight years' worth of props from the television show went under the hammer in Auckland.

Pacific Renaissance Pictures, the company behind Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules, is no longer producing the television shows and decided to sell off the props and costumes collected in its eight-year history.

Thousands of people flocked to the two-day auction, where everything from strips of leather from the sewing room floor to rubber "dead" bodies was up for grabs.

The items were sorted into 3500 lots, all of which were snapped up by fans and others in the business.

Six of Xena's own props - including swords, arm bands and her signature weapon, the chakram - were auctioned to raise money for Starship children's hospital.

The auction fetched almost $13,000 for the hospital's new neurosurgical unit, with one of the swords alone fetching $3600, the top price paid for a single item.

One of the other more unusual items was a 2m-tall giant - bought for $1150 by a Christchurch man, who plans to use it to promote his demolition yard.

As well as the thousands of props that sold this weekend, there are 7000 costumes still to go, including clothes from Xena, Hercules, the sci-fi Cleopatra 2525, and the 18th-century comedy Jack of All Trades.

Sadly for fans, Xena's actual costumes will not be sold.

The wardrobe auction will be held on May 16.
