New Zealand's biggest celebration of gayness - the Hero festival - has been underwritten by a mystery backer. That's got everyone pointing their finger at the celebrity world.

Insiders have put money on it being celebrated gay icon Lucy Lawless - who was a keen supporter of the hero parade and was extrememly disappointed it didn't go ahead last year.

As Xena Warrior Princess Lucy has been worshipped around the world by the gay community for her butt-kicking power and beauty. The role has brought her many spoils and perhaps this is a way of supporting the community that has given her so much.

The irony of it - if it is her - is that her father Frank Ryan was on the Auckland city council that made things so difficult for the festival.

Insiders say Lucy is sure to make an appearance at the aprty at the Civic theatre after the parade on February 17.

The festival will be opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark and Auckland mayor Christine Fletcher on February 9.

Highlights will screen on TV3 the week after the parade.

And I hear Lucy is limbering up her voice to host the Sky City starlight symphony in Auckland on February 3.
