Good Day New York (TV show)

September 16, 1997

[After reading this painful interview, you get the feeling that these news folks are complete idiots. Man!]

Lucy wore blue jeans, black pumps, an oversized white shirt and a blue shirt tied at her neck and draped over her back.

Felipe Sparks: She's here, Xena The Warrior Princess herself. Actress Lucy Lawless joins us when we come right back and she's gonna help the fight. (At this point two people were on their knees, bowing down at her feet) "We're not worthy. We're not worthy. You're not gonna hurt me?" (Lucy put her right hand up to her face and looked a little embarrassed. She was heard saying "Oh God!"

Interview starts with a scene from the next season with Xena fighting Ares.

Felipe Sparks: And yes Lucy Lawless is here. She's fine. She's tall. She's taller than I thought she'd be. I want to throw it over to Bobby Rivers and hit you with Rizzo. Oh is she bad or what?

Bobby Rivers: Oh she is all that and a bag of chips too. And New York City is Xenatown. Grease is the word. And the word is that Lucy Lawless is flawless as Rizzo. We see her as Xena Warrior Princess on TV, she now takes command of the Broadway stage. Here is a clip from Grease.

(Clip with Lucy as Rizzo singing Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee)

(Singing) "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with virginity. Won't go to bed til I'm legally wed, I can't, I'm Sandra Dee."

Bobby Rivers: Who knew that one day Xena would be on stage singing "I'm lousy with virginity."

Lucy Lawless: Yeah how about that.

Bobby Rivers: How are you doing Lucy Lawless?

Lucy Lawless: Mind you everyone is usually so disappointed that I'm actually wearing clothes. I've had to roll up my sleeves so you could see more flesh. (Laughing)

Bobby Rivers: (laughing) We know you just rocked, you know that you just rocked as Xena Warrior Princess. And you've got the little...

Lucy Lawless: (holds up a 5" Xena doll) I have gotten this from BJ from outside. This little 9 year old boy and I have a 9 year old, so we go along famously.

Bobby Rivers: Has your 9 year old, has Daisy seen the show yet?

Lucy Lawless: Only the movie. She's still in New Zealand at the moment and um...I'm looking foward to getting her over here.

Bobby Rivers: When she gets here to see you in Grease will she also get to see Xena?

Lucy Lawless: Oh of course. What do you mean?

Bobby Rivers: Hey I read that Daisy had never seen you on TV as Xena.

Lucy Lawless: No, no. No, of course she has. We don't habituallly watch it because it's on a Friday night when she's usually at work with me.

Bobby Rivers: Okay.

Lucy Lawless: After school and um... it doesn't occur to us to go home and switch on the television.

Bobby Rivers: Did you really get the part because you sang "I'm An Old Cowhand" on Rosie O'Donnell?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah that's really true.

Bobby Rivers: That was your audition?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah, Rosie kind of cast me. (Laughs)

Bobby Rivers: You know what, we missed a little of that number. Could you sing a little of it now for us now. (singing) I'm an old cowhand

Lucy Lawless: (singing) From the Rio Grande and my legs ain't bow and my cheeks ain't tan.

Bobby Rivers: We are going to see Grease! You know we are. How are we doing on time? Got a couple of minutes here. You know, you told me that when we go into show business we can get all the good reviews and all the awards we can, but we're always tryng to impress out mom. How does your mom feel about you as Xena?

Lucy Lawless: She's thrilled. She's coming over.

Bobby Rivers: She is?

Lucy Lawless: My mom and my dad are coming from New Zealand. My grandmother, a couple of aunties, um.....my brother from London. Every ??????? I have a steady stream of New Zealanders coming through my apartment so um I'm not at all lonely.

Bobby Rivers: Any changes in the TV show for the new season?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah. Yeah, there's a lot of, a lot of new stuff coming up. There's yet another character. So you know when I play triple characters? We've thrown another one into the mix. Um...it will be Warrior Priestess Tramp.

Bobby Rivers: Alright!

Lucy Lawless: She has a speech impediment.

Bobby Rivers: How heavy is your sword?

Lucy Lawless: Oh it is tremendously heavy.

Bobby Rivers: How heavy is it?

Lucy Lawless: Oh it's about a 12 sword.

Bobby Rivers: Whew Lord!

Lucy Lawless: I'm stronger than I look.

Bobby Rivers: Yeah, you got to be strong to carry a 12 pound sword.

Lucy Lawless: No, if you hit something......

Bobby Rivers: Milton Berle said that didn't he? Is it a real sword Lucy?

Lucy Lawless: Um...we have swords and swords.

Bobby Rivers: Do you choreograph......

Lucy Lawless: Some are rubber.

Bobby Rivers: Do you choreograph all your fight scenes?

Lucy Lawless: Yeah! (laughs) I write, shoot, do my own make-up. I.....

Bobby Rivers: I just wanted to ask, listen I didn't know.

Lucy Lawless: I am a one woman show.

Bobby Rivers: Hey let him ask cause I'm going to headlines in the next half hour. Listen I heard you were into Jazz?

Lucy Lawless: Yes I am.

Bobby Rivers: Got a couple of Jazz CDs for you.

Lucy Lawless: Why thank you.

Bobby Rivers: Subway Players, here in New York, and like Miles Davis and Toshua Redmon.

Lucy Lawless: Fantastic!

Bobby Rivers: And stuff like that for you Lucy. Something for you to listen to while you're in your dressing room while you're doing Grease on Broadway. Can I take the doll back? I don't want to reach for it. I don't want to....

Lucy Lawless: You can but....But you know I have to sign it and give it to that little boy now even though it does not belong to him.

Bobby Rivers: It doesn't and he'll get over it if he doesn't get it! OH! I'm sorry. I did not mean that. We'll get something for BJ. Lucy Lawless, you are flawless.

Lucy Lawless: Not at all. Thank you very much.

Bobby Rivers: Thank you.
