Lucy Lawless: I love working through my pregnancy because I'm not sitting at home. Some days are a little hard to get up at six in the morning, but by and large it's been a real pleasure.
Lucy: There are not many actresses that can work through a pregnancy. There has never been a female action hero that had a pregnancy. It's not like we can put on a raincoat. We did that for a couple of months, but it got to the point where we just couldn't hide it.
ET: This role is very physically demanding. Have any concessions been made to take into account your pregnancy?
Lucy: They've written the pregnancy into "Xena" simply because there was no hiding it any longer. Being five months pregnant, it was not a good look no matter how hard they tried. So the costume has changed and they try to cut me down. They look after me. It's been good.
ET: What about the battle scenes? Have they been altered?
Lucy: Yes. The fight scenes have been altered a little bit. I did a conventional one a couple of weeks ago, and I was surprisingly good at it! You get really flexible when you're pregnant. But, other than a couple of fights, it's really been cut down to a minimum. Now we're fighting using other techniques. We've phoned in a few psychic forces to help ease us through this transition.
ET: So the script writers haven't stopped people from fighting a pregnant woman?
Lucy: It's an occupational hazard when you're at work. Like I said, I'm just glad that I'm able to work through it.
ET: What are your plans with work after the baby is born?
Lucy: I'll be taking a few weeks off after the baby is born. Unfortunately, it will be a set kid for the first year or so of its life. But babies are being raised through worse.
ET: Are you going to take any time off from the show?
Lucy: You can skate by without Xena for a few episodes, but since it is the big character, you can't really leave her out of the picture all together. So Lucy has to come to work! There are a lot of mortgages riding on this series.
