Lucy Lawless hosts the "First Ever Herc & Xena Battle-on-a-thon" on USA Network
November 26, 1998
Lucy Lawless was the host for a marathon of 4 Hercules and 4 Xena episodes on Thanksgiving Day 1998. On the hour and half-hour, she would comment on the episodes. I, like many others, had other responsibilities on Thanksgiving Day, and I couldn't tape all the bits. Those that I did get, I have sound bytes of available below.

On "Is There A Doctor In the House":
- itadith.wav (842K)
Lucy Lawless: "The network was a little put off by the amount of blood that was in this episode. There was this great scene where Xena gets to cauterize a leg using a shield over a hot flame, and we had to cut it out, but you could see the steam going. This was one of my absolute favorites from the first series, and I'm still very proud of it."
- itadith2.wav (660K)
Lucy Lawless: "Renee and I actually ad libbed quite a lot of the resuscitation scene, and it was quite difficult for two fairly young actresses, so, um, it still makes my heart glad."
On the chakram:
- chakram.wav (743K)
Lucy Lawless: "The chakram was actually a real weapon, and it was launched off the finger because of course it was terribly sharp. Well, we experimented with a terribly sharp one, and it didn't go down very well, so we modified it and came up with the old frisbee-throw chakram."
On "The King of Thieves", "Royal Couple of Thieves" and Bruce Campbell in general:
- kingofthieves.wav (495K)
Lucy Lawless: "This episode has the mammoth talents of the wonderful Bruce Campbell. Bruce is one of the most fantastic physical comedians you'll ever meet, so we're very happy to have him on board...take a look."
- autolycus.wav (578K)
Lucy Lawless: "In another episode with Autolycus, there's a scene where Autolycus meets his evil twin ego, his id, and it is taken word-for-word from an 'Evil Dead' scene where Ash meets bad Ash."
- rcot.wav (495K)
Lucy Lawless: "In 'A Royal Couple of Thieves', this is where we rip off...sorry..this is where we pay homage to Peter Gunn, with the dance of the seven veils, but on our budget it became the dance of the three veils...here we go."
On "The Gauntlet":
- gauntlet.wav (479K)
Lucy Lawless: "This is where we get to see Bob Trebor wearing drag. This was the second time I ever played Xena, and it was a very very dark episode, very moody, and stylish."
On "Hooves and Harlots":
- hnh.wav (462K)
Lucy Lawless: "In the ride to battle, the chariots are being drawn by centaurs. Now, since we didn't have many centaurs available on the day, we cheated it, but it looks all right."
On "Outcast":
- outcast.wav (941K)
Lucy Lawless: "In this episode, we already knew 'Xena' was going into series, so I dyed my hair dark. They brought back the Lyla character, which I had played previously. Kevin couldn't let this go by, so he slipped in a little ad lib about 'Doesn't she remind you of Xena?' Course, Iolaus says 'No, not a bit', so..watch out for it, here we go."
On "The Reckoning":
- reckoning1.wav (825K)
Lucy Lawless: "Oh, this has got that bad old Ares in it. He's always flirting with Xena. They've got this love/hate, lust/hate relationship. Stay away, Xena, don't trust him! He's bad to the bone."
- reckoning2.wav (528K)
Lucy Lawless: "I seem to remember that on the day we ad libbed that Xena pops Gabrielle one, Renee and I thought that would be funny, so it made it in final cut, I think."
